Global Packaging Sustainability Director

Lead the development and execution of a broad-based, company-wide packaging sustainability strategy, integrating sustainability throughout the company.

Ensure that Coty’s packaging sustainability effort enhances consumer experience, business performance and supports the long-term interests of the company on responsible growth.

The Packaging Sustainability Director reports directly to the Vice-President of R&D Packaging Consumer Beauty Division and indirectly to the Vice-President of Corporate Responsibility.

Position will be located either in the U.S (Morris Plains, NJ) or in Europe (Darmstadt or Paris). Perimeter of responsibilities covers the 3 Coty divisions: Professional Beauty, Consumer Beauty and Luxury.




1. Lead the effort to create a packaging sustainability vision for the company encompassing people, profit and planet. Develop the business case to address packaging sustainability issues.

2. Secure and leverage senior level commitment and support for integrating sustainable packaging development into core processes and decision-making.

3. Lead the formulation of Coty’s long-term packaging sustainability vision, mission and operating principles, and lead the development of a high-level strategy to support them.

4.Collaborate with the company’s internal groups (for example Corporate Responsibility, Procurement, R&D Packaging, Marketing, Engineering) to develop a coordinated sustainability plan. Build packaging sustainability principles into short and long-range business planning, capital planning and operations planning

5. Form and lead an internal Packaging Sustainability Steering Committee that will help shape and initially oversee the launch of the Sustainability effort of the company. Oversee and define the scope of the Committee, short term and long term. Appoint the Committee members, define duties and assign the Committee accountabilities.

6. Serve as the internal leader and “go to” expert for sustainability, monitoring emerging trends, new programs and improvement areas, communicating and educating others on packaging sustainability topics.

7. Serve as the central point of contact for all interfaces with customers about Packaging Sustainability. This includes being the lead interface with customers relative to inquiries, requests for information on company efforts to support Packaging Sustainability, and all written and verbal communications to customers about Sustainability. As necessary, collaborate with internal subject matter experts to ensure appropriate responses and communications.

8. Support Corporate Responsibility and Regulatory departments in the interface with all government agencies and departments, domestic and international, relating to the company's responses to questions or statements for position on Packaging Sustainability related matters. This includes subjects relating to the broader topic of Sustainability, such as Trade legislation etc. Collaborate closely with internal subject matter experts e.g., the Vice president of Corporate Sustainability Program Director and the Vice Presidents of Packaging and Procurement, to ensure appropriate responses and communications.

9. Identify and prioritize areas for institutional packaging sustainability efforts and recommend strategies for proactively addressing relevant sustainability issues.

10. Foster a culture of sustainability through ongoing organizational communications and education.

11. Offer expertise and provide leadership-level support for initiatives to reduce company-wide packaging resource consumption and packaging waste generation.

12. Facilitate internal and external communications and visibility as the company expert on packaging sustainability issues. Create and implement communication strategies to publicize the company’s sustainability effort and promote broad awareness of sustainability initiatives, both internally and externally.

13. Build effective partnerships with external organizations to support Packaging sustainability efforts.

14. Assess the Coty’s current packaging sustainability performance and identify and prioritize the organization’s key sustainability issues.

15. Formulate action plans with defined objectives, measures, targets and responsibilities to support agreed upon packaging sustainability strategies.

16. Ensure appropriate internal controls and measurement system (Dashboards) are in place to support Packaging sustainability efforts.

17. Measure and monitor progress against Packaging sustainability strategy, objectives and performance targets.  This includes influencing and contributing to the development and upgrade of required reporting systems.  





  • Packaging Degree (Bachelor, Master), ideally supplemented by professional certification in Sustainability Program
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Packaging Design/Development/Engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years in Sustainability retail consumer goods role. Experience in Beauty industry a plus.
  • Already operating in a senior leadership role with successful implementation of Packaging sustainability strategy (evidences will be requested at interview)
  • Wide range of experience with packaging material and technologies. Knowledge in packaging technologies (e.g. molding, flexibles, cartons, print & decoration, assembly), project management and packaging development approaches. 
  • Experience working with packaging suppliers, external associations and institutes. Knowledge of packaging manufacturing and production on high speed production lines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to identify smart solutions with the right level of pragmatism. Attention to details that matter in Beauty.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently in global diverse teams and environments.
  • Passion for solving problems using creativity and/ or analytical skills. Experience in identifying technical solutions and their implementation is a plus.
  • Excellent collaborative skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Entrepreneurial, agile and hands-on spirit. Focused and disciplined. High sense of accountability and ownership. Open to change in a dynamic growing environment.
  • Very strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills for verbal and written communication of ideas, concepts, strategies, technical rationales, risks, issues and recommendations.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of your time to domestic or international destinations.
