THE ROLE

We at R&D Packaging Development team are seeking a Packaging Manager to lead projects within OPI R&D packaging innovation pipeline. The role is part of the Global R&D Team. The primary focus is to deliver package innovations and drive the development and execution of new and restaged packaging projects across the range of packing materials and structures (bottles, closures, brushes, labels, etc.) used in line with business unit strategies.

The R&D Packaging Development team works in a cross-functional collaboration towards the innovation and development of highly differentiated packaging concepts and technology platforms by linking consumer insights and emerging technologies to satisfy our business objectives. In this full-time position based in Calabasas CA, you report to the Senior Manager R&D Package Development, located in Calabasas CA.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead E2E development of key packaging projects/initiatives and functional specifications to deliver against business goals.
  • Lead planning and production of prototype materials with internal and external (third party manufacturers) partners.
  • Identify new upstream innovation ideas/trends and technologies globally to drive projects and brand growth.
  • Lead continuous improvements in laboratory equipment usage, efficiency, and associated new packaging capability growth.
  • Responsible for the development, qualification and scale-up of new packaging materials and formats, applying lean six sigma methods to ensure reliability and repeatability. 
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain/External Operations/Process teams during evaluation and execution phases to write & review trial protocols, conduct compatibility tests and line trials.
  • Analytical and business acumen to continue supporting OPI base business with rapid changes of packaging and environmental regulations.
  • Develop eCommerce packaging solutions that can be used across various product combinations & support projects in areas of problem-solving (base business), cost-savings and future innovation opportunities.
  • Experiences with beauty product/packaging delivery system (brush, dropper, foam, etc) development.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential:

  • BS, MS, or PHD degree (US or foreign equivalent) in Chemical, Materials Science, Polymers, or Packaging Engineering with 10 plus years of experience (preferably in Beauty Industry) in developing and executing CPG innovation and cost savings programs, including consumer ideation, development, testing and execution through commercialization.
  • Capability to build strong business cases for new packaging initiatives.
  • Demonstrated strong business judgment and decision-making skills; ability to identify, prioritize and articulate high-impact initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experiences in successful consumer-centric & total package offering development cross-functionally to deliver packaging innovations across all regions and sectors.
  • Solid background in primary packaging components, such as glass and plastic containers, aluminum tubes, sachets/pouches, flexibles/refillable formats.
  • Strong project management, communication, problem-solving and presentation skills.
  • Having experiences in prototyping, simulations, CAD, etc, is a plus.
  • Must have experiences in leading productivity/cost-saving initiatives.
  • Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards, drafting, and specification standards is essential.
  • Provide technical expertise for OPI quality issue (QI) complaints.
  • Knowledge on various eCommerce packaging requirements (i.e., FFP, SIOC, Prep-free) and hands-on experiences on eCommerce testing is a plus.
  • Work with eCommerce teams and Distribution Center (DC) teams to build best practices for entire Supply Chain.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical communities and proven ability to work independently is essential.
  • Fluent in English; any other language is a plus.
  • Able to travel up to 30% of the time to domestic or international destinations.

Desirable:

  • Experiences with leading Sustainability-focused projects/initiatives is desirable.
  • Passion for eCommerce and Sustainability and being independent and entrepreneurial showing the ability to work with minimal direction.
  • Experiences in scouting & screening new innovations/technologies externally to identify mid-term to long-term packaging solutions is a plus.
