Senior Product Developer (Consumer Insights)

The purpose of this R&D role is salon & retail consumer value creation via supporting the development of superior products and supporting existing market products with new technical claims / concepts. Working in partnership with line management and R&D and commercial functions you will own and deliver key studies in the area of consumer understanding, claims definition and data generation to support claims, competitor monitoring and benchmarking, and evaluation of new prototypes both in-lab and on-head.


The role reports to the Senior Director based in Germany and may require international travel.



  • Generating high quality consumer or technical data either directly or via partnership with the Product Test Lab function.
  • Analyzing data independently and bringing clear conclusions and recommendations to line management.
  • Benchmarking/understanding the competitive landscape and periodically sharing with project teams.
  • Delivering on-time, even in time-pressure situations.
  • Project teamwork: work effectively with commercial functions and global R&D partners, often on multiple projects in parallel, delivering key project data on prototypes performance/claims/competitor benchmarking, meeting project timings.
  • Proactive contributor to the area of technical product claims ideas, technical product stories and demonstrations.
  • Work with the global Product Test Lab and Legal to generate core data for product claims.
  • Build skills in the science of consumer understanding and help to ensure this skillset is leveraged on project work.
  • Envisioning the future: proactive contributor to new ideas for the innovation pipeline and new ideas for how to describe existing product in new compelling ways (stories, claims, demonstrations, new ideas based on trend), leading to delivery of new products or claims on existing products.



  • 3+ years’ experience in FMCG or similar with a track record of delivered contributions in consumer/customer understanding, product claims and competitor benchmarking.
  • Business proficient English language skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher within a scientific or technical discipline.
  • Track record in delivery of projects to demanding schedules.
  • Ability to effectively communicate scientific concepts, data, and interpretations in a non-technical manner.
  • Demonstrated high levels of team spirit and can-do attitude.
  • Curiosity and empathy to transfer consumer and stylist insights into directions for new products/claims/demonstrations.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment with a high level of independence and a drive towards delivery of goals.
