We are seeking a Senior Packaging Developer to lead projects within the R&D packaging innovation pipeline. This role is part of the Global R&D Team. The primary focus is to deliver package innovations and drive the development and execution of new and restaged packaging projects across a range of packaging materials and structures (bottles, closures, brushes, labels, etc.) used in line with business unit strategies.


The R&D Packaging Development team works in cross-functional collaboration towards the innovation and development of highly differentiated packaging concepts and technology platforms by linking consumer insights and emerging technologies to satisfy our business objectives. In this full-time position based in Darmstadt Germany, you will report to the Senior Manager R&D Package Development, also located in Darmstadt.



  • Support end-to-end development of key packaging projects and functional specifications to deliver against business objectives.
  • Identify and qualify packaging solutions which meet our corporate sustainability and ecommerce goals.
  • Partner across functions to overcome barriers and bring the brand vision identity to life.
  • Ensure packaging design performance, robustness and manufacturability are optimized using FMEA tools. 
  • Search for new upstream innovation ideas and technologies to drive projects and brand growth.
  • Understand and integrate the requirements of possible supply chain solutions in the packaging design and value engineering process.
  • Identify possible suppliers and cost drivers, consider menu options to optimize cost, scale and simplification delivering speed to market, delight, and best value.
  • Support the ideation and feasibility evaluation of packaging value engineering ideas for existing brands.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain Packaging during evaluation and execution phases to write and review trial protocols, conduct line trials, and compatibility tests.




  • BS or MS degree in Chemical, Materials Science, Polymers, or Packaging Engineering with 5 plus years of experience, preferably within the beauty industry.
  • Experience collaborating with Marketing, Procurement and Supply Chain plants to support execution where R&D packaging expertise is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in successful consumer-centric and holistic package development cross-functionally.
  • Solid background in primary packaging components, such as glass and plastic containers, aluminum tubes, sachets/pouches, and flexibles.
  • Ability to share project updates, write testing plans and summaries, articulate key learnings and recommendations, influence decisions needed by team/management, and communicate risks and status appropriately.
  • Experiences in prototyping, simulations, CAD, etc.
  • Experiences in managing and working with third party manufacturers.
  • Provide technical support for quality issue (QI) complaints.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical teams and proven ability to work independently is essential.
  • Fluent in English; any other language is a plus.
  • Able to travel up to 30% of the time to domestic or international destinations.



  • Experience with various types of plastics or glass manufacturing processes.
  • Strong track record of leading end-to-end innovation projects.
  • Experience of scouting and screening new innovations/technologies externally to identify mid to long-term packaging solutions in ecommerce and sustainability is a plus.
